Abstract:
Linguistic expressions are a fundamental aspect of human communication, involving the use of language to convey respect, deference, and consideration for others. This thesis aimed to explore the importance of using linguistic expressions appropriately and to understand their precise meanings. It also investigated the difficulties and challenges respondents face when using such expressions in daily interactions. By analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data collected from native speakers, the study identified key similarities and differences in politeness strategies between English and Albanian. The research further highlighted appropriate ways of addressing others, especially elders and figures of authority. Data was gathered through an online questionnaire, which included questions about the use of linguistic expressions in everyday conversation. Findings indicated that most participants did not face significant challenges in identifying or appropriately using politeness expressions. However, the study suggests that increased use and exposure to such expressions during conversations may enhance understanding and promote more effective communication. Ultimately, the findings contribute to a deeper understanding of linguistic politeness and its implications for intercultural communication between English and Albanian speakers.
